Coaching School

So I recently got a new job. I am the new assistant volleyball and basketball coach at Permian and I could not be more excited! To start off my new journey I got to go to coaching school in Arlington. One week of listening to high school and college coaches teaching about drills, philosophy, relationships, and scouting. I learned so much but best part of all I got to know the other coaches that I am going to be working with a little bit more. I am very excited to get started. I am going to get a small taste next week because we are hosting Permian Panther Camp on Monday until Wednesday. We will be working with the incoming 6-9th graders. Then 2 weeks after that we start two a days!!! Cant believe how fast summer has flown by. It has not been a boring summer thats for sure! Trip to Nashville with mom, dad, jt, zach, and justin. Trip to Rangers game with JT and Zach. Weekends by the pool. Lunch dates with Rachelle and Aunt Dianne, Mother Daughter Sister Trip with mom, aunt dianne, aunt donna, rachelle, and grandma carolyn. So many memories made this summer.

With school starting soon I am sure I am going to have many more funny stories headed for me!

Summer Tease

This last weekend was Memorial Weekend. It was just a little tease of what my summer is going to be like. Friday night JT and I went to dinner and a movie. We watched What To Expect When Your Expecting. Pretty funny but a little weird to watch when you re not expecting. Saturday we cleaned up the house and backyard. Jessi and Matt came into town and we went to Twin Peaks to watch the UFC fights. After the fights we went to 10, the bar in the mall. That was our first mistake, going to a bar in Odessa. While we were there a Lil Wayne and Pac Man Jones look alike began a fight with some other ballers and we all got kicked out. (BTW, you're welcome for the entertainment)
Sunday was amazing, all the Springer's, Pagans, and Collins family came over and we grilled and swam. It was a great time. However, everyone got sunburned. That's what happens when you spend about 8 hours out in the sun.
Monday JT and I again went to the movies and watched Battleship. It was awesome. I wasn't expecting to like it since it has aliens in it but it was actually pretty awesome.
Needless to say it was extremely difficult to wake up this morning. Alarm was going off at 6:30. I didn't get out of bed until 7:40. Still managed to have breakfast and get to school before 8:00! POW!

Today all my classes are reviewing and working on their final exams. Only 2 days until freedom and they are already pretty much checked out.
I had a kid show up to 1st period with NOTHING. No pen. No paper. No reviews. NOTHING.

I also have kids making up finals that they missed last week. Hoping to keep them from coming to school Friday to take their finals.

Well this is my Mon-Tuesday. Hope its not as crappy as a Monday and is more interesting than a Tuesday.

Taking a day off...so I can work

Yesterday I took the day off. Not for a fun road trip. Not for doctors appointments. Not because I'm sick. I took the day off yesterday so I could work. Yes. Work. As if I do not have enough time during my 50 minute conference period to get everything done. I had two classes of multiple choice finals to grade, athletics certificates to print, and prizes for the athletics party to buy. Doesn't sound like its much, it took ALL DAY.
Started working on printing off certificates at 10:30. Finished at 12:30. 2 HOURS!
Went to buy gift cards and prizes for athletics party at 1:00 and arrived home at 4:00. 3 HOURS!
Started grading papers at 4:15 finished at 6:00. 2 HOURS!
So yes, I took the day off to work.

Last night we grilled and swam. It was a perfect ending to a long day off of working.

I woke up thinking it was Saturday. FML...its only Thursday.

Putting myself to sleep

Normally I wouldn't complain about my classes being quiet and working so diligently. However, today I am going to complain. My classes have been working on their final exam review all morning. I have limited them to only using their own notes and brains to answer as many questions as possible during a 45 minute period. During this 45 minute period for the last 4 1/2 hours it has been nothing but silent. All I can hear is the rattling of paper while they search for their answers. Its amazing...for them. For me, its putting me to sleep. I've completed an entire review myself. Filed some papers. Written down the journal topics for next week. Written my lesson plans down into my planner. Read newspaper. Sigh...I need a nap.

My life...the record player

Bell rings

Me: Make sure you write the question for your journal and today's date. Also make sure you fill out your planner for today. Today's journal question is, what are 3 goals that you have for this week. Write the date, the question, and your answer.

-Classroom falls silent-
-Kids "working"-

Kid 1: We have to write the question right?

Me: Yes. Write the journal question, today's date and your answer.

-Silent class-

Me: Ok, now lets look at the other board. Here is your final exam schedule next week and the week after. So we are looking at Monday May 21st, you have English and Spanish finals on Monday May 21st. Tuesday you are taking Math, AVID, and Speech. So that means you have a final in here on May 22nd. Thats next Tuesday.

Kid: WE HAVE A FINAL IN HERE TUESDAY?!@

Me: No, next Tuesday. May 22nd.

Kid: Ok

Me: Wednesday you will be taking Science/Art/Music/ and PE final. Oh,remember that your grades cut off on Wednesday the 23rd. Make up work, missing work, and corrections are all due before this day. If you are failing on the 23rd then you will not get to attend the end of the school party on Friday the 25th.

Kid: We're having a party on Friday?!@

Me: No. You will go to the party on the 25th only if you are passing on the 23rd when grades cut off.

Kid: Oh ok

Me: Today I am giving you the vocabulary words that are going to be on your final exam. Remember you will take this final exam on Tuesday May 22nd. Write your name on this paper before you do anything else. If you still have your vocabulary words from this semester you can staple the words to the paper. If you did not save your vocabulary words like I told you to, you have to get a book and look the words up and write them down again. You can write them on a separate sheet of notebook paper or you can write them on this paper I just gave you. I don't care. Just get the words and definitions down somewhere. The paper is front and back. You can do half today and half tomorrow. Just get it done. I don't mind that you talk, I mind if you are not working. Do you have any questions about what you are doing today?

Class: NO

-Class working quietly-
12.5 minutes pass

Kid A: Can we write on this?
Kid B: What if I have these definitions in my notes?
Kid C: Is this all due today?
Kid D: Can I write the definitions on another piece of paper?

Welcome to my life. EVERYDAY. EVERY CLASS PERIOD.
I give directions clear as day, they ask the same exact questions.

Clean Your Lint Trap and Catching A Mouse

Today has been super eventful and its only 1:00!

Last night I weighed and measure myself (JT actually measured me) all because I have started the Advocare 24 Day Challenge. Today was my first day. The first part of the challenge is a cleanse. I watched a YouTube video over the challenge and a lady explained the cleanse like, "cleaning the lint from a dryer." By lint she means all the crap that I've eaten and by dryer she means my intestines. This was also described as a "calm cleanse" and that I "wouldnt want to spend my entire day in the bathroom." Both of which I think are lies. "Cleaning your lint" is not pretty. Think about when you pull that little trap out in your laundry room, particles fly everywhere no matter how careful you are...there's always repercussions. This is how I am feeling right now. Although I have not felt like my ass was going to fall off of my body, I do feel like I should be allowed a port-a-potty near my portable for a few days.
The morning begins with a cleanse drink. Its disgusting. Also from the helpful video I watched I was told I could mix orange juice in with the water and powder to give it more flavor. I think I did too much orange juice because all it tasted like was pulpy orange juice...think rotten pulpy orange juice. I decided to slam the drink like a tequila shot. And just like my first tequila shot, I cried after I was done. This shit better work.

Classes were wonderful. Kids were doing an informative speech about someone famous and how they became famous. Surprisingly, they rocked it and turned in their essays and did their presentations today! (Yes I could be considered a horrible teacher for making them present on a Monday, or I could be celebrated because they had longer to wikipedia their person.) My favorite is when they come in with their amazing excuses about why they had not completed the assignment, that was assigned a week ago. The assignment that they had 3 days of library time to work on...in class. The assignment that they wrote introductions to as a grade one day in class. Yeah...that assignment.
"Coach, I left to go home early and left all my stuff here so I didn't finish."
"Coach, can I present tomorrow so I can make my speech longer?"
"My Internet wasn't working at home so I need another day."

WRONG. You are the weakest link...Goodbye! (None of them would understand that reference)

"You may not have another day to work on your speech. It is a miracle in its self that you are even in class today."

Moving on to other fun things...

I caught a mouse today. Ok well I didn't literally catch it in my own hands but I discovered it.

For the past 3 months we have been battling the mouse in our athletics office. He ate cookies and pooped all over the place. Apparently at some point, someone came and laid down one, yes ONE glue trap. As I was reading I could hear some rustling under the bench in our office. I looked over and after further investigation I found him. Or her. We will just call the mouse IT. IT was stuck to the glue paper and looked to be trying to do the jerk, or having a seizure. I was paralyzed in fear. What if IT pulled its self off the glue paper?! All I could imagine was watching it give one more heave-ho and then BOOM blood would gush everywhere like in a Quintin Tarantino movie. Like when they blow the guy's head off in the backseat of the car in PulpFiction.

That never happened, the blood gushing everywhere.

After a couple minutes of waiting for IT to just lay down and die already, IT never did. I had to call for backup. The maintenance guy came and took the glue paper away. IT was never seen again.

FIN.

Instant Parents

A few days ago I received an email at school about a foreign exchange program needing host families for the upcoming school year. I thought that this was an awesome idea. JT and I could be host parents for a kid!! So I took the idea home to JT and presented it to him. I dont think he was overly excited about it but he paid enough attention to what I was saying to make me think that we had a shot for a kid. So I laid out the pro's and con's of being instant parents.
Pro: We get to have a kid for a year and not actually have to be pregnant, give birth, go through their identity search in junior high. Plus they are foreign!
Pro: They are foreign! What if we got a phenomenal athlete. I would purchase buttons of them in their school uniform and wear them on game days. Then what if the kid we had ends up getting a college scholarship?! That happened because we hosted them. Then they become famous and play professional basketball and we get tickets to all the games because we were his second family. Of course I am just assuming the kid we got was going to be 7'4 and German, or Czech Republic because obviously that meant he was going to be an amazing basketball star.
Pro: They will help with housework. According to the website, JT and I would get to set house rules including curfew, Internet/computer time, and house chores that the kid would be responsible for. Of course I would keep this simple of course and say that they have to clean their room, help with dishes, cook a meal from their culture every now and then, learn to clean the pool, and pick leaves up outside. Nothing terrible.
Pro: This is a great experience. We get to adopt a kid for a year. They get to come to our Thanksgivings and Christmases and any other vacations or trips that we go on. How fun would that be to take our little German to Jal New Mexico and introduce him to Grandpa Don. HILARIOUS!

Con: We have to keep a kid for a year. That means packing up the office and giving them a room. That means having a regular schedule, no last minute plans. That means if his appendix bursts WE are responsible for getting him to the emergency room and waiting while it gets removed. Basically, WE MUST BE RESPONSIBLE! <*sigh*>
Con: I think con number 1 sums it all up.

So in the end JT and I decided that we are not ready for a high school kid to come live with us. We will possibly try and look at the situation again next year and see if we feel any differently.

In another part of our extremely fun and childless life, we are playing in a basketball league through ECISD. Basically its intramurals with teachers. We have played 2 games so far and both have been exciting for their own reasons.
Game 1: VICTORY 44/14
Game 2: LOSS and there was fighting involved. YES! FIGHTING TEACHERS!! Shame on them. haha

Ethan and Lindsey are coming to stay the weekend with us. We are going to see the Avengers tonight and then having a pool party tomorrow. I am excited to see them. Lindsey is pregnant and due in November I believe.
Speaking of pregnant so is Kristi and Billy Bob! They are Due November 10th but I think Baby Walker will be here October 27th. They find out if it is a boy or a girl at the end of this month, Im betting girl.
